Self Portraits

Each new year, shortly after my birthday, I like to draw a self portrait. I spend a lot of my time drawing portraits of famous people or persons of influence that it’s nice to just ground and challenge myself by drawing me. I generally approach the portrait in a way that attempts to capture how I’m feeling about life and what I’m relating to at the present time while experimenting with a different style each time. The result is an eclectic series of personal growth both in the physical and artistic sense.

Bill Murray

My series Role Models is Inspired by a deep-rooted love for cinema and movie culture while referencing my work for Little White Lies magazine where I am creative director by day. And is an extension of the concept created for Little White Lies' 1994 issue featuring an exquisite corpse illustration of Jim Carrey for its cover. I loved making this illustration so much I always wished to make more.

Sans Wars

It’s NOT a trap! Introducing SANS WARS — An A-Z of iconic Star Wars characters.

Game Changers

Game Changers is a personal portrait series of great men and women athletes who, throughout their lives, bent the rules of their sport and changed the course of history. I’ve always been into sports ever since I was a kid and completely fascinated at what makes a champion. This series looks at those remarkable few who become legends of the game. The GAME CHANGERS. These are but a few of my favourites. Check back here from time to time for new additions. I’m hoping to keep this up!

Andy Warhol

Cover artwork for publisher Laurence King’s Secret Lives Of Artists series book on Andy Warhol. The cover was intentionally designed as a wrap-around artwork sleeve with an illustrated portrait of Warhol on the front, with a fantastic scene outside of Warhol’s favourite 80s New York hangout - Studio 54. Look closely and the scene features a montage of some famous faces—and regulars at the infamous night spot—including Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson, Grace Jones, Keith Haring, Olivia Newton John and even Bianca Jagger on a horse to reference her famous birthday party where she rode into the club on a, umm, you betcha… a horse!

Empire Movie Playlist

A collection of fun (head-only) portraits of famous movie characters for Empire Magazine’s Ultimate Movie Playlist. Inspired by my Actorbet and Sans Wars posters, Empire commissioned me to design this fun cover to promote their ultimate list of must-watch movies. At 235 movies long, we couldn’t illustrate them all, let alone fit them on one cover so we settled on a selection of some of the most memorable. BING BONG for the WIN? Who’s your favourite movie character?

AirBnB Magazine

ONES TO WATCH: A collection of 7 portrait illustrations I created for AirBnB Magazine. The art directors brief was to cleverly illustrate 7 different “Directors to Watch” for their pre-academy-awards and upcoming Movie Issue. Each portrait was to be illustrated using custom styles and patterns that gave reference to their movie(s) while also keeping a realistic, but graphic feel to the design within each of these new cinematic faces.

Turboland

My good friends Pedro & Lola invited me to be a part of their debut zine called TURBOLAND to launch the opening of their new collective Workshop Madrid.

ESPN Magazine

Various illustrations to support ESPN’s ‘Show Me The Receipts’ series as seen on theundefeated.com. Each illustration features a portrait of a central identity (the star) surrounded by a typographic quote (from said star). The series itself profiles famous actors, musicians and celebrities who each boasted - at some point in their career - about playing sport (kind of well) in college and/or professionally after graduating.

Music Oracles

The Music Oracles is a series of (fifty) portraits illustrated over a four month period in 2018 and in cahoots with with UK publishing house Laurence King. The illustrations are depictions of famous musicians hand-picked by LKP from the last 100 years (apart from two) as both inspiring, and, controversial figures and include the likes of John Lennon, Beyonce, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis & John Coltrane, Grace Jones, David Bowie, Bjork and Bruce Springsteen (to name but a few).

Each portrait was created to support a ‘Music Oracles’ box set in the LKPs ‘Oracles’ series - a tarot-style collection of 50 creative inspiration and life advice cards for the budding musician. Box sets will be available from may, 2019. Watch this space for an updated post.

Role Models

My series Role Models is Inspired by a deep-rooted love for cinema and movie culture while referencing my work for Little White Lies magazine where I am creative director by day. And is an extension of the concept created for Little White Lies' 1994 issue featuring an exquisite corpse illustration of Jim Carrey for its cover. I loved making this illustration so much I always wished to make more.

Little White Lies: Selma

Illustration of David Oyelowo for Little White Lies Weekly issue 6 - SELMA, directed by Ava DuVernay. Starring Tim Roth and David Oyelowo (as MLK) SELMA is a chronicle of Martin Luther King's campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965. In this illustration I’ve tried to incapsulate the power of free speech in a political propaganda kind of way. BIG, BOLD, SHOUTING type and different quality of halftones come together to portray a man in a struggle for human rights.

Little White Lies: 1994

A portrait illustration of Jim Carrey as an exquisite corpse for Little White Lies Magazine's special 1994 issue - celebrating the 20th year anniversary of the classic Farrelly Brothers film DUMB AND DUMBER and the release of DUMB AND DUMBER TO (2014). For the cover I drew portraits of Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas, The Mask, and Ace Ventura, Pet Detective and then mixed them up for the cover using a torn collage effect with each layer revealing the next character - a simple but effective idea to convey Jim Carrey's incredible character repatoire.

Little White Lies: Elysium

Illustration of Matt Damon for Little White Lies Magazine issue 48 - ELYSIUM, directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9). Starring Jodie Foster and Matt Damon (as Max) ELYSIUM follows the story of sick man who agrees to undertake a dangerous mission that could bring equality to the population as the ultrarich live aboard a luxurious space station called Elysium, and the rest live a hardscrabble existence in Earth's ruins. Elysium was my first cover design for Little White Lies and the start of my love-affair with drawing portraits of some of my favourite movie stars and their characters.

The Actorbet

The Actorbet is my third print series for Room Fifty. The design features 26 iconic (and my favourite) movie stars arranged to form the English alphabet in a silly, puntastic, kind of way.

Prints available via Room Fifty

Each print comes in 3 different sizes - A2, A3 and A5 as archival standard giclée print on smooth, 240gsm art paper and limited edition to only 50, with signed Certificate of Authenticity

Frames are hand-made from solid wood in Black or White from ethical, sustainable sources. Room Fifty use Quality 2mm thick float glass and send the frames using bespoke packaging to avoid breakages.

All products are shipped worlwide.

Huck: Paddle Against The Flow Book

Illustrations of the great Don Letts and Henry Rollins for Huck Magazine's debut book PADDLE AGAINST THE FLOW - a small hard-cover coffee table book of collected words of wisdom by some of the worlds most influential personalities. Each personality and their quote was accompanied by beautiful hand-drawn portraits by some of the world's leading artists. It was a real honour to draw these guys (and Rollins' arms..!!!)  as their music has always been so inspirational to me as an artist.

"I believe that one defines oneself by reinvention. To not be like your parents. To not be like your friends. To be yourself. To cut yourself out of stone." - Henry Rollins
